Verta Pickens Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mrs. Verta Lee Pickens, 95, of 1111 Evergreen Road in Anderson, South Carolina, was born June 2, 1927, in Anderson County to the late Rufus and Laura Wardlaw. She departed this life on Friday, June 10, 2022, at AnMed Health Medical Center. She was a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church. She was a dedicated homemaker and enjoyed family, cooking, traveling, and watching her favorite soap operas. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Verta leaves to cherish many wonderful memories, daughters; Rosa Mae Lomax, Savannah Rucker, Lois Sloan, Roberta Roebuck, Minnie Heard, and Alice Howard, all of Anderson; Mabel Bell of Williamston and Robin Michelle Habaz of Piedmont; and sons, John Edward Pickens, Willis Pickens, and Major Pickens of Anderson, 29 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren, and 50 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her late husband, John Robert Pickens, daughters, Shelia and Cora Lee Pickens; son, Milledge Pickens; brothers and sisters, Major Wardlaw, Claude Wardlaw, Norman Wardlaw, Alfreda Ellington, Ella Mae Morton, all of Detroit, Michigan, Carl Wardlaw of Johnson City, TN, Joe Rufus Wardlaw of Pelzer, SC, and Sylvene Jones of Anderson, SC. Funeral service for Mrs. Pickens will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Anderson, SC. Interment will follow in the church’s cemetery. The service will stream-live from The Unity Mortuary’s Facebook page. Public viewing will be Wednesday, June 15, 2022 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Thursday (the day of the funeral service) from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at the mortuary.
