John Henry Sylvester Cobb (Daddy Bet as he was called by his grandchildren and Bet by his family and friends) was the oldest living son of twelve children born to the late James Ross Cobb and Bertha Cobb, born in Greenville, South Carolina on April 11, 1923. He was joined in Holy Matrimony to Vivian Blackmon in 1948 and was married for 70 years; she preceded him to death June 14, 2018. He served with all Black 92nd Regiment in Europe, which supplied food and ammunition to the American allied forces. He served three years in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class. His awards include: The Good Conduct Medal, European Service Medal and Presidential Service Award signed by Barrack Obama. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Bertha Cobb; brothers, James Moore Cobb, Robert Lee Cobb, Douglas Cobb, and Michael Newuiett; and sisters, Corene Cobb and Madora Bradley. He leaves to cherish his fond memories daughter, Carolyn Ruth Cobb Williams of Conyers, GA.(James-deceased); grandchildren, Reginald E. Murray (Jolanda) of Conyers, GA. and David Murray (Dana) of Sterling Heights, Michigan; great-grandchildren, Indyia Christine Murray, Reginald Reid Murray, Davi Simone Murray, Roman Solomon Murray, and Jorri Renn Murray; great-great-grandchildren, Jaylin Maurice Hamilton and McKenna Christine Williams; siblings, Alphonzo Cobb Apoka of Florida, Wilhelmenia Alexander of Pendleton, SC, Eunice Donald of Pelzer, SC, Joe Cobb of Jonesboro, GA., and Julius Cobb of Greenville, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. On Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 1:00 pm a graveside ceremony will be held at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, 619 Greenville Drive, Williamston, SC 29697 to celebrate his life with Reverend Brian Scott, officiating. Public viewing will be Friday from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am until 11:30 am at the Williamston branch. The family is at their respective homes.
